You take out travel insurance for short or long trips. Most travel insurance policies include the following cover as standard:

• Assistance to individuals. This assistance covers you against the risks of illness, accident and/or death.
  
  
• Breakdown assistance. Most travel insurance policies cover towing costs as standard. In addition, some also provide passenger assistance and/or a replacement car.
  
  
• Cancellation. Cancellation insurance covers you against potential financial losses resulting from an unforeseen event that forces you to interrupt your trip.
  
  
• Luggage. Luggage insurance covers you in the event of loss or damage to your luggage.

   

We advise you to find out exactly what cover is included in your travel insurance. For example, some insurers offer breakdown cover as additional cover rather than standard cover.

Is it better to take out travel insurance with an insurer or a travel agency?

You can take out travel insurance with either an insurer or a travel agency. Travel insurance is often cheaper and easier to take out at a travel agency. The disadvantage, however, is that the cover is often more limited, meaning you are less protected when travelling. If you really want good protection during your trip, it is better to take out travel insurance with an insurer. This insurance is usually a little more expensive, but it offers more comprehensive cover than that offered by banks or travel agencies.

Which travel insurance policies can I compare?

There are two types of travel insurance:

• Temporary travel insurance. This is a type of travel insurance that you take out for a specific period. You choose this type of travel insurance when you are going on a single trip.

   

• Annual travel insurance. This travel insurance protects you all year round. You should choose this type of travel insurance if you travel several times a year.
