Since 2020, Belgian insurers have been able to issue the Green Card:
by email,
as a PDF,
on a smartphone,
or printed in black and white.
It is valid during a police control, an accident, or a vehicle inspection.
The digital version has the same legal validity as the paper version
Insurers confirm that:
“The Green Card can be provided in digital format: you can receive it via email and display it on your smartphone. It has the same legal validity as the paper version.”
The digital Green Card is now the standard
Belgian insurers offer a digital Green Card, accessible via: carte verte digitale, accessible via :
the customer portal,
the mobile app,
or email.
Please note: it remains mandatory in Belgium
Even if it is digital, you must be able to present it during: lors :
a police control,
a vehicle inspection,
an accident.
Is the digital Green Card accepted abroad?
Yes, in most European countries.
Belgium follows the rules of the Council of Bureaus (CoB), which has authorized the digital Green Card since 2020.
Countries where the digital Green Card is accepted:
The entire European Union
Switzerland – Norway – Iceland – Liechtenstein – United Kingdom – Serbia – Montenegro
Serbia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – North Macedonia – Andorra & Monaco

Some countries require a paper copy, even if it is in black and white:
· Turkey – Ukraine – Moldova – Albania – Morocco – Tunisia – Israel – Iran
In these countries, printing the Green Card is mandatory.
Documents to present when selling a vehicle
In Belgium, when selling a vehicle, the Green Card is not a required document to be handed over to the buyer.
Required documents for the sale:
· Pre-sale technical inspection report (used car inspection)
Car-pass
· Registration certificate (carte grise)
· Certificate of Conformity (COC)
· Pink form (filled out by the buyer for their new registration)
